The Andrew E. Crapol Scholarship: Nicolas Abrigo

We're very proud to announce that Nicolas Abrigo was the second recipient of the Andrew E. Crapol Scholarship for men's soccer at William & Mary. All donations made to the fund and CRAPOLFEST fundraising go to this scholarship.

SENIOR YEAR (2011)

Third-Team All-Region ... First-Team All-CAA ... First-Team VaSID All-State ... Appeared and started in all 19 matches for the Tribe ... Led the team in points with 20 and goals with nine ... Also had a pair of assists ... Ranked first in the CAA with five game-winning goals, which also ranked him in a tie for third on W&M's single-season list ... Tied for seventh in the league in goals and ninth in points ... Scored on a penalty kick in the Tribe's loss to Georgia State in the CAA Tournament ... Tallied an assist in the College's 3-2, overtime win over Northeastern ... Netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in the College's 3-2 win over Hofstra ... Named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week on November 15 ... Named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week on November 15 ... Named CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player ... Recorded a hat trick, including the match-winner, in the Tribe's 4-0 win over Hofstra in the CAA Championship match ... Scored the game-winning goal for the College with 24 seconds left in the second overtime to propel W&M to the CAA Championship with a 1-0 win over Delaware ... Tallied an assist in the Tribe's 2-1 overtime win at Northeastern ... SOPHOMORE YEAR (2009)

Appeared in 18 matches, starting in 13 … Finished the season with two assists … Tallied helpers in the contests against Loyola (Md.) and James Madison … Played a season-high 79 minutes against George Mason and James Madison … Took 11 shots with six being on-goal …

FRESHMAN YEAR (2008)

Started six matches as a freshman and appeared in 18 games in the midfield ... Put six shots on goal in eight attempts, including two in a 3-1 victory over the University of Central Florida (9/12) ... Opposing teams held to one goal in all but one of Abrigo’s starts ... Earned the Best Rookie Award for the 2008 season ... 

HIGH SCHOOL 
Earned VISAA All-State selection as a sophomore and a junior … Garnered all-conference distinction during each of his four seasons … Received the Flint Hill Husky Award as a sophomore in 2006 … Named the MVP at the Maroon & Black Invitational tournament at Episcopal High School in 2006 … Played four years in the central midfield position for Chris Brown at Flint Hill … Team captain during each of his final three seasons at Flint Hill … Score more than 40 career goals and helped the program to its second conference championship and its first three state final four appearances … Played club soccer fro the SWYCA Sidekicks and helped his team to VYSA State Cup Championships in 2002, 2005 and 2006 … Sidekicks were State Cup Finalists in 2003 and 2004 … Also played club soccer with the MSC Dragons … Corpus Christi Mission Volunteer in community outreach programs … A member of the Honor Council and Spanish Club at Flint Hill …

PERSONAL

Son of Gonzalo and Carmen Arenas-Abrigo … His father, Gonzalo, played professionally in Chile with Colo Colo for four years … Intends to major in chemistry at the College.

Andrew E. Crapol Scholarship Fund

We're very excited to announce the official establishment of the Andrew E. Crapol Scholarship Fund at the College of William & Mary. Through all of your wonderful generosity and support, our expectations have been surpassed, with an endowment coming in just our first year of trying. These efforts are a beautiful testament to Andy's love of his time at William & Mary and the game of soccer, as well as your love for Andy.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ANDREW E. CRAPOL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

An endowment has been established in loving memory of Andrew E. Crapol ’00 at the College of William & Mary to support a scholarship for a member of the men’s soccer team. Created through an outpouring of generosity from family and friends, the Andrew E. Crapol Scholarship Fund will provide assistance to a student athlete who demonstrates, as Andy did so well, outstanding leadership and team spirit.

Jovial and energetic, caring and successful — words are insufficient to describe the life that was tragically cut short in March of this year, but the numerous friends, admiring teammates, and loving family members that Andy left behind are powerful testimony to the remarkable Williamsburg native. A four-year athlete in both high school and college, Andy was a member and leader of William & Mary’s men’s soccer team from 1996 to 2000, winning the Coach’s Award (since renamed the Crapol Award) his senior year.

Equally avid about learning as he was about soccer, Andy’s natural curiosity about the world took him to America’s capital and London following receipt of his Bachelor of Arts in economics. He subsequently pursued his interest in the legal profession, earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia in 2005 and joining the international firm Debevoise & Plimpton as an associate. In January 2009, he married his longtime sweetheart, Allison Simmons Crapol ’03.

As one person has remarked, “The mold was broken with Andy Crapol, and we were all enriched by his time with us.” Although he is keenly missed, Andy’s spirit is still very much alive at his alma mater. With this scholarship, his legacy will be further enlarged through future Tribe soccer players.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the trustees of The College of William & Mary Foundation hereby express their sincere gratitude to Allison Simmons Crapol ’03; Edward P. Crapol and the Honorable Jeanne F. Zeidler M.A.Ed. ’76, Andy’s parents; Heidi A. Crapol ’84, his sister; and all other family and friends who have honored Andy’s memory at the College; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the trustees of The College of William & Mary Foundation hereby accept this commitment and establish the Andrew E. Crapol Scholarship Fund.
